Why Do You Get Out Of Bed In The Morning?

Are you one of the “80%” of people unhappy with their job? All over the world the number of people expressing dissatisfaction in the workplace is forever rising.  According to a report by Gallup, a US research-based management consultancy,  the number of “actively disengaged” employees outnumber those “engaged” by nearly 2 to 1.

Up until June 2015, I was in the 80% bracket. I was unhappy because I wasn’t doing what I truly wanted to do. Sadly many of  us let life happen as we get older, giving up on our childhood dreams, happiness, and sanity over the ‘security’ of a paycheque over happiness and sanity.

I believe that there are two types of work/reasons why people get out of bed in the morning to go to work (this is just my philosophy):

  1. Working towards fulfilling their dreams i.e. focusing on everything from aspirations, lifestyle, to how you want to raise your family, and paid work (be it as an employee or self employed).
  1. Working out of fear to survive i.e. giving up on all of the above

Which one are you? Do you get out of bed in the morning because you’re working towards your dreams or living your fears?

I agree wholeheartedly  that we need to pay the bills, and provide for our family (this is the reason many give as to why they don’t do what they love). It really isn’t about the type of job that you’re doing. Whatever you choose to do let it because you are working towards your end goal. Put working towards your dreams be at the forefront of  the reason you get out of bed every morning. Don’t allow situations to dictate how you live.

Look at the bigger picture. Getting paid is just one aspect of work. True work is living to make your dream a reality. It includes your lifestyle, how you want to raise your family, the kind of relationship you want to have, and many more. Don’t give up on all of these just because you have to pay the bills, or provide for the family. You don’t want to end up like the 80% who go to work everyday unsatisfied. Your life is bigger than  just working to get paid.

Put yourself first; not what people expect of you. Be like the people choosing passion over a paycheck. The truth is you can achieve all the finer things in life doing what you love.

The only change you need to make is a shift in your perception. There are many resources online that can help you. You could even start with the The Shift, a movie by the late Wayne Dyer.

Don’t get out of bed in the morning just to get paid. Work to live, and not live to work.
